The easiest way to build a bad smart home is to buy smart-home products.

Start instead with a household problem: a dark hallway, an empty house you worry about, a bedroom that overheats, a door you repeatedly forget to lock, electricity use you cannot see, or a relative who needs a simple way to control lights.

If the device does not make that problem materially easier, connectivity is not the benefit. It is overhead.

Every smart device is also a software product

A connected bulb may physically last for years while its app, cloud service or authentication system changes much sooner.

Before buying, look for an update policy. Ask how long security updates are promised, whether the device can be reset and transferred, and whether core functions continue if cloud service ends.

This is especially important for permanently installed products—thermostats, locks, switches, cameras, garage-door controllers and major appliances. The harder something is to replace physically, the more demanding you should be about software longevity.

Start with the router

The FTC and NIST both emphasize the home router because it is the common network path for many connected devices.

Change default administrative credentials. Use modern encryption. Keep router firmware updated. Disable remote administration if you do not need it. Use a strong Wi-Fi password. Replace a router that no longer receives security updates.

A $25 smart plug does not exist in isolation. It becomes another endpoint on a network that may also carry work laptops, personal files and cameras.

The smart-home shopping list should sometimes begin with “replace unsupported router.”

Account security is physical security

A compromised music account is annoying. A compromised camera or door-lock account can expose the home.

Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available. Review who has household access. Remove former roommates, contractors or old phones from account lists. Understand whether guest access exists and how it expires.

For cameras and microphones, enable login notifications and review recent sessions.

Do not share one master password with everyone simply because the product makes user management inconvenient. Inconvenient access control is a product flaw.

Privacy risk differs by device category

A NIST study of 401 U.S. smart-home users found that perceptions varied depending on device type. Voice assistants were viewed as particularly problematic, while users expressed more confidence about some security devices and thermostats.

That makes sense. A smart bulb and an always-listening microphone create different kinds of data.

Before purchase, list what the device can sense:

  • audio;
  • video;
  • motion;
  • presence;
  • temperature;
  • energy use;
  • door state;
  • location;
  • routines;
  • voice identity.

Then ask where that data goes, how long it is retained and whether cloud processing is essential.

Privacy labels and policies are imperfect, but a company that cannot explain its data flows clearly deserves skepticism.

Local control is resilience

The best smart-home product has a manual fallback.

A smart switch should still switch. A thermostat should still allow temperature adjustment. A lock should have a credible physical or offline recovery path. A connected appliance should complete its basic job without a phone.

Local control improves resilience during:

  • internet outages;
  • cloud-service failures;
  • account lockouts;
  • phone loss;
  • company shutdowns;
  • guests or family members who do not have the app.

If a device makes the physical world unusable when software fails, the design has shifted too much risk to the owner.

Matter helps—but it is not magic

Matter is an interoperability standard backed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance and major technology companies. Its goal is to let compatible products work across ecosystems with secure, IP-based connectivity.

Matter 1.6, released in June 2026, focused on setup, multi-ecosystem coordination and richer contextual control rather than simply adding more device categories.

For consumers, the important promise is reduced platform lock-in.

But a Matter logo does not answer every buying question. Manufacturers can still differentiate apps, features, cloud services and update policies. Some functions may work only in a brand’s own app. Platform support can vary.

Use Matter as a positive compatibility signal, then verify the exact feature you need across the ecosystems you use.

Choose the smallest system that solves the problem

Smart-home enthusiasts often design for theoretical expansion.

Most households need less.

If the problem is one dark stairway, a motion-sensing bulb may solve it without a hub. If you need scheduled heating, a good thermostat may be enough. If you need remote leak alerts, a few sensors can be more valuable than whole-home automation.

Every additional platform adds:

  • another account;
  • another update stream;
  • another privacy policy;
  • another failure mode;
  • another family-training problem.

Complexity should earn its rent.

Cameras require a higher standard

Connected cameras combine privacy, security and recurring cost.

Before buying:

  • Is local storage available?
  • Is cloud storage required for basic recording?
  • What does the subscription cost after promotions end?
  • Is end-to-end encryption available?
  • Can recordings be exported?
  • How long are clips retained?
  • Can activity zones reduce recording of neighbors or public areas?
  • Does the camera work if the internet fails?
  • Can you disable the microphone?
  • How are police or third-party requests handled?

Also consider whether a camera is the right solution. Better lighting, a physical door viewer, a local alarm or a non-cloud sensor may solve the actual problem with less data collection.

Smart locks must fail safely

A lock’s job is access control, not app engagement.

Check battery-life warnings, physical backup, keypad reliability, emergency power options and what happens if a phone is lost. Understand auto-lock behavior and whether it can trap or confuse vulnerable household members.

Test the mechanical door alignment first. Many “smart lock problems” begin with a door that does not latch smoothly.

Technology cannot compensate for bad carpentry.

Energy-saving claims need measurement

Smart thermostats and energy monitors can help reduce waste, but savings depend on the building, climate and behavior.

Be skeptical of universal percentage claims without assumptions.

A connected thermostat is most useful when scheduling, occupancy sensing or remote adjustment solves a real pattern of waste. A smart plug can reveal standby loads, but buying twenty smart plugs to save tiny amounts of electricity may consume more money and attention than the problem deserves.

Measure before automating.

Think about the exit

All smart devices eventually leave the home.

Before you buy, ask how to:

  • factory reset;
  • erase recordings;
  • transfer ownership;
  • remove from cloud accounts;
  • recycle or replace batteries;
  • disconnect from hubs;
  • export useful data.

A product that is easy to onboard and difficult to decommission is not fully designed for ownership.

Utility

  • solves a repeated problem;
  • saves meaningful time, energy or worry.

Resilience

  • manual controls;
  • offline behavior;
  • battery/physical backup.

  • update commitment;
  • MFA;

  • secure reset.

Privacy

  • minimal sensing;
  • understandable retention;
  • local processing/storage options.

Interoperability

  • Matter or open standards where relevant;
  • works with more than one ecosystem;
  • export/transfer path.

Cost

  • hardware;
  • installation;
  • subscriptions;
  • replacement accessories.

Reject products that score high on novelty and low on resilience.

The bottom line

The smart home is finally becoming more interoperable, and standards such as Matter are reducing some of the old ecosystem friction. But interoperability does not eliminate the responsibilities of connected ownership.

The best smart-home device should be boring after setup. It quietly turns on the light, adjusts the temperature, reports the leak or locks the door. It receives updates. It does not demand constant account maintenance. It has a manual fallback. And when you replace it, you can erase it cleanly.

A home becomes smarter when technology disappears into dependable service—not when every object gains an app.
